Morris VFW eliminated from state tournament
Playing back-to-back games today, Morris fell to Bemidji 11-9 then Elk River 4-2, to be eliminated on the first day of the State VFW Baseball Tournament.
Morris ends the season 17-4 overall.
In both games Morris had the tying runners on base when the final out was recorded.
Morris started the tournament with a tough draw, falling to defending state champion Bemidji 11-9.
Post 5039 fell behind early when Bemidji scored two runs in the first inning.
Morris answered with one in the bottom of the inning when Tanner Picht got on with a fielder's choice, stole second, and scored on a Bemidji error.
Bemidji added three runs in the second with a solo home run, a sacrifice fly, and a single.
In the fourth, Morris rallied to load the bases with a walk to Picht, a single by Beyer, and a bunt by Tyler Henrichs. Picht scored on Jake Torgerson's RBI single and Beyer scored when Lincoln Berget was walked.
Chandler Erickson started the fifth inning with a triple on a shot to the gap in left center. He then scored on a double by Picht, who advanced on Beyer's ground ball. Picht then tied the game, scoring on an error by Bemidji.
The tie was short lived, as Bemidji scored six runs on four hits in the sixth - a two-run double, an RBI single, a two-run triple, and an RBI single.
Morris rallied in the bottom of the seventh, but four runs were not enough. Erickson started off the inning with a walk, Picht reached first on an error, and Beyer singled to score Erickson. Henrichs walked to load the bases. Torgerson reached on an error to score Picht. Then Jergenson's sacrifice fly scored Beyer. Berget's RBI single plated Henrichs.
Jake Torgerson started on the mound, pitching four innings and giving up five hits and five runs.
Chandler Erickson took the loss, giving up four hits and six runs in three innings of work.
Following the loss, Morris had less than an hour to move to another field and get ready for the next game. Elk River had lost to Perham 7-1 in the opening round.
Morris got behind early again. Elk River scored three runs in the bottom of the second with help from three walks.
Erickson plated both Morris runs. In the third Erickson singled, stole second, and scored on a single by Picht. In the fifth, he walked, advanced on a single by Picht, and scored on Beyer's RBI single.
Elk River added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth when the lead-off batter doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly.
Beyer pitched the entire game, giving up six hits, five walks, and three earned runs. He struck out five.
