Morris VFW reaches tonight's District 5 championship game

The Morris VFW baseball team won four straight play-off games to advance to tonight's District Championship game in Madison. Morris will take on Alexandria II at 6 p.m. Alex II is undefeated and Morris has one loss in the tournament. If a second game is needed, it will be played immediately after the first game.

Starbuck 1

Morris erupted for four runs in the third inning and added three more runs in the fourth on the way to a victory over Starbuck Saturday.

Sam Mattson went the distance giving up only four hits, walking three, and striking out seven batters.

Tanner Picht was 2-for-3, Brody Bahr was 2-for-4 with a double, and Mac Beyer hit a three-run homerun. Lincoln Berget added a hit, as well as Jordan Staples hitting a double.

Jake Torgerson followed Mattson's fine outing by also tossing a four-hitter in a victory over Madison later on Saturday. Torgerson struck out five and gave up no walks.

Picht went 2-for-3, while Bahr and Torgerson each hitt a double. Tom Holland also had a single for Morris.

On Sunday, Mac Beyer threw a no-hitter over Willmar, while Tanner Picht hit a pair of home runs and a double to lead Morris.

Beyer faced three batters over the minimum, striking out nine while walking four.

Picht was 3-for-4. Holland was 3-for-4 with a double. Clay Staples also had a big game going 2-for-3 as the DH. Beyer, Torgerson, and Henrichs had one hit apiece

Later on Sunday, Henrichs started on the mound for Morris, but injured two fingers on his pitching hand diving for a bunt in the first inning.

Sam Mattson came in and took over where he ended Saturday by going the distance to lead Morris. Mattson struck out 10 batters.

Morris plated six runs and sent 10 men to the plate in the second inning. Hits by Bahr, Jordan Staples, Clay Staples, and a suicide squeeze single by Lincoln Berget set the stage for this victory. Hitting doubles were Beyer, Picht, and Bahr.

Berget went 3-for-4, Beyer was 2-for-4, Bahr was 2-for-4, Jordan Staples hit 2-for-4, and Clay Staples went 1-for-4.
