Morris VFW team picks up 9-1 win over Starbuck
The Morris VFW baseball team improved to 2-1 on the season with a 9-1 win over Starbuck on Tuesday at Chizek Field in Morris.
Alex Erickson threw a complete game two-hitter for the win, giving up one unearned run while walking two and striking out 13.
Morris jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the top of the first when Tyler Hansen hit a one-out single and came around to score on a Ryan Beyer double. A Brady Valnes walk with two outs and a double steal put runners on second and third before Travis Rinkenberger came through with a two-run single. Cole Riley then doubled off of the center field wall to score Rinkenberger.
Morris added two more runs in the second when Hansen drew a one-out walk and advanced to third on an Eric Riley single with two outs. Valnes then drove in both runs with a long triple.
The score was 5-0 in the fourth as Erickson led off with a single, moved to second when Hansen walked again, and eventually scored on an E. Riley sacrifice fly.
Starbuck scored a run in the top of the sixth and Morris scored two final runs in the bottom of the inning. Hansen hit a one-out triple and scored on a Beyer double. Beyer scored the final run of the game on a Valnes single.
