Morris VFW wins championship, advances to state tourney

The Morris VFW baseball team won the District 5 Championship to advance to the state tournament.

Post 5039 came from behind to defeat Alexandria 9-8 Monday in Montevideo and remain undefeated in the play-offs.

Morris trailed 7-4 after five innings, but rallied to score five runs in the bottom of the sixth. Mac Beyer pitched out of a jam in the seventh to hang on to the win.

Morris had 12 hits, but committed five errors. Alexandria had 15 hits and three errors.

The district tournament started with a shut out of Dawson last week. On Friday, Morris defeated Benson 7-2. In Sunday's action, Post 5039 advanced to the championship game with a 10-0 win over New London-Spicer in five innings.

This year's state tournament is Aug. 11-14 in Bemidji.
