Morris wins 14AA championship
The Morris 14-under team won the Minnesota Sports Federation 14AA state tournament held July 23 - 25 in Austin.
Morris won the first game in their pool by defeating Shoreview 5-3 Friday night. On Saturday, Morris played Rockford in the second game of the pool and won 8-2. This gave the team first place in their pool and an opportunity to play in the championship bracket.
Morris played against BOLD Sunday morning. After falling behind 6-3, Morris came back to defeat BOLD in five innings by a score of 16-6. In the semi-final game, Morris was up against Lakeville North. This game ended with a 10-3 victory. The championship game featured Morris against Howard Lake. Morris jumped out on top and never looked back, winning 14-5. Morris ended the tournament as State Champions going 5-0.
Coach Rob Jergenson was very pleased with the way the team competed all weekend.
"Pitching was great and the defense only committed four errors all tournament," said Jergenson. "The hitting was also strong. There were several times in the tournament when we had a two-out hit to score runs and keep the inning alive.
"This tournament, as with the others played this year, was played in memory of Mitch Kliendl," added Jergenson. "I believe his presence was felt throughout the year."
Morris was also champions in the Marshall Tournament and the Morris Tournament. Morris ended the season with a record of 13-2.
The Morris 14U baseball team includes (Keane Turner, Damon Gibson, Gage Backman, Aaron Nelson, Logan Nordly, Nick Vipond, Jason Rinkenberger, Bryce Jergenson, David Moberg, and Jason Montonye. The team was coached by Rob Jergenson, Bruce Moberg, and Mark Vipond.
