Murder charges filed in New Year’s deaths

MINNEAPOLIS – Four people face federal murder charges for the death of a couple on New Year’s Day 2011 on the Red Lake Indian Reservation.

Prosecutors filed an indictment Monday in U.S. District Court in Minneapolis against the men for the deaths of Craig David Roy and Darla Ann Beaulieu.

Court documents state Roy and Beaulieu died after being stabbed multiple times. Their bodies were found in the remains of Roy’s house on the Red Lake Indian Reservation, which was destroyed by a Jan. 1, 2011, fire.

Geshik-O-Binese Martin, 29, currently in the Beltrami County Jail; Edward McCabe Robinson, 28, currently in federal custody; David John Martin, 45, of Columbia Heights; and George Allen Martin, 24, of Red Lake, are each charged with two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of second-degree murder and one count of robbery.

Court papers state Roy and Beaulieu were killed while the defendants stole money and drugs from the home.

The court papers were unsealed after the men made their initial court appearances Monday.

The indictment also charges Kevin John Needham, 20, no known address, and Terin Rene Stately, 25, of Red Lake, were charged with one count of robbery.

If convicted of murder, Robinson and the three Martins face potential maximum penalties of life in federal prison.

They and Needham and Stately face a potential maximum penalty of 15 years in federal prison on the robbery charge.

There is no parole in the federal criminal justice system.

The FBI, Red Lake Tribal Police Department, Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and the State Fire Marshal cooperated on the investigation.
