Museum seeks nominees, donors for main gallery 'Hall of Honor'
The Stevens County Historical Museum is naming its main exhibit and gallery area, and is looking for nominations for its Hall of Honor and sponsors to create and maintain it.
The gallery's Men and Women of the Land Hall of Honor will honor those in the county who made important contributions to it, said Stevens County Historical Society President Ward Voorhees.
The idea for the Men and Women of the Land Hall of Honor has been considered for some time, and the time is right to introduce the Hall of Honor because it will be developed in conjunction with the 100th anniversary of the West Central Experiment Station in 2010.
"The land is what brought people to this area," he said.
The historical society is seeking 110 donations of $5,000 each. Those men and women will be recognized in the Hall of Honor with their name, a photograph and their story, said museum executive director Randee Hokanson.
"It's inclusive, not just about agriculture," Hokanson said. "We recognize that this is an agricultural area but we don't want it to be restricted to farm men, women and families. We want to honor all people who made this their home and contributed."
The Hall of Honor will be a permanent display but is expected to be mobile to allow moving it to various locations in the museum, Hokanson said.
The photos and stories will be important historical records of value to those seeking to understand the area and the people who have and are developing it, Hokanson said.
"We don't want to be the ones who pick out stories," she said. "It's their story."
Nine other areas of the museum have been sponsored by individuals and families for donations of $25,000 or more. The museum's original, 102-year-old Carnegie Library building was refurbished and the new addition was completed in 2004.
The historical society's 10-member board will be contacting people about their interest in nominating a person for the Hall of Honor and making a donation.
Anyone wishing to make a nomination and donation can do so by contacting a board member: Voorhees, (320) 795-2570; Stan Mumm, (320) 392-5451; Bernice Erdahl (320) 589-9007; Vicky Dosdall (320) 795-2412; Sally Finzel (320) 589-3855; Steve Rudney (320) 589-3541; Linda Retzlaff (320) 795-2478; Deanne Marty (320) 324-2418; Matt Carrington (320) 589-2677; Hokanson (320) 589-2379.
