'The New Standards' to kick off UMM Performing Arts Series on Sept. 6
MORRIS, Minn. -- The 2014–15 University of Minnesota, Morris Performing Arts Series opens on Saturday, Sept. 6, with jazz trio The New Standards. The ensemble will perform at 7:30 pm in the Student Center’s Edson Auditorium.
Formed in 2005, this mini super-group consists of pianist Chan Poling, vibraphonist Steve Roehm, and bassist John Munson. Coming from varying backgrounds of punk, rock, and jazz, each musician brings with him a unique perspective. Their repertoire includes sendups to Tin Pan Alley, glam, soul, and four decades of rock from Neil Young to the Replacements to Beck.
Prior to the evening concert, the New Standards will host “Mining for Inspiration” at 1 p.m. in the Student Center’s Edson Auditorium. The trio will discuss and demonstrate how it makes its choices musically and lyrically. This session is free and open to the public. All are encouraged to attend.
Performing Arts Series audiences can also look forward to classical pianist Charlie Albright, the James Sewell Ballet in Guy Noir, Ragamala Dance, and the National Players in William Shakespeare’s The Tempest in 2014–15. Additional information on all of these artists is available at morris.umn.edu/performingarts.
