No. 4-seeded Morris VFW swings past Willmar
Trent Marty’s two-run single in the second inning was the difference in the game as Morris VFW beat Willmar 4-2 in the first round of the District 5 baseball tournament at Chizek Field Tuesday, July 22.
Morris VFW Post 5039 scored two runs in the first on two wild pitches then held on for the win to advance in the tournament.
Marty had a single and scored in the first, leading at the plate. Brady Jergenson and Philip Messner had the other hits for Morris.
Willmar scored twice in the top of the fifth, but couldn’t dent Morris starter and winner on the mound Brady Jergenson in the final two innings. Jergenson allowed four hits and two earned runs in seven innings, walking four and striking out eight.
Tyler Johnson took the loss on the hill for Willmar, despite a strong outing late in the game. Johnson allowed four hits, four runs, two earned in six innings pitched. He walked three and struck out eight, retiring 13 out of the last 14 batters, including nine in a row.
Morris will now play top-seeded Alexandria 15s at 5 p.m. on Friday, July 25 at Minnewaska Area. Willmar will play Ortonville on Saturday, July 26 at 11 a.m. in a loser bracket game also at Minnewaska Area.
