No charges coming related to June 20 home-invasion death in Moorhead

MOORHEAD - Clay County prosecutors say the Moorhead man who shot and killed a 17-year-old who entered his apartment on June 20 was acting in self defense and will not be charged with a crime.

Joel LaFromboise was shot in the chest at point-blank range after wandering into the home of a Vernon Allen just after midnight on June 20.

The case file was forwarded to the Clay County Attorney's Office last week, according to a news release from the Moorhead Police Department.

Clay County Attorney Brian Melton held a press conference at noon today to lay out the case and state there would be no charges.

Detectives had waited for six months for tests to be done in the state-run crime lab in Bemidji on the .12-gauge shotgun used in the shooting.

LaFromboise's father, Ralph, had said he hopes charges are filed against Allen.

"I'd like to see him suffer the way I'm suffering," Ralph LaFromboise recently told The Forum. "It would make me feel better to see him locked up."
