Offense leads Cougars to sweep

The Minnesota Morris Cougars swept Finlandia on Monday afternoon, improving to .500 on the year. It is the latest the Cougars have been at .500 since joining the UMAC. Minnesota Morris will look to go over .500 on Wednesday as the travel to face Crown.
Finlandia pushed a run across in the top of the first, but ended up leaving three stranded, missing a chance to put up a crooked number. The Cougars took advantage of Eric Terres reaching on a dropped third strike to start the bottom of the first and quickly tied up the game.
The Lions came back with two runs in the top of the second, taking the lead for the second time. Minnesota Morris rallied in the bottom half of the inning, scoring five runs on four hits. Chandler Erickson and Devin Waldvogel started the inning with back to back singles. Doug Zimmel reached on an error, driving home Erickson. Logan Nordly doubled down the left field line, driving in Waldvogel. Terres had a ground out RBI and then Jake Schmitz tripled to drive in Nordly. Schmitz scored on a one out ground ball to third by Kyle Grote to put UMM up 6-3. Morris added a run in the third, building their lead to 7-3.
Morris was unable to hold the lead as Finlandia rallied to score three in the top of the fourth and one in the top of the fifth. In the bottom of the fifth, Zimmel led off with a double to right center and scored on a sac bunt by Terres as the Cougars took a one run lead. The Cougars got some insurance in the bottom of the sixth, pushing across two unearned runs.
Waldvogel picked up the save for Morris, working two innings and allowing just one base runner in the 10-7 game one win.
Minnesota Morris scored a couple runs in the bottom of the first inning, taking a quick 2-0 lead in game number two. Finlandia tied the game in the top of the second inning. UMM quickly took the lead back in the bottom half of the inning, but the Lions tied it right back up in the top of the third. Cody Reinke led off the bottom of the third with a double and scored on a wild pitch making it 4-3 in favor of UMM. Kylan Hill walked and scored on a triple by Scott Peterson, his first of two triples in the game. Peterson scored from third on a balk, making it 6-3. Morris ran away with the game as starting pitcher, Reinke settled down on the mound.
The Cougars scored twice in the bottom of the fourth, pushing the lead to five at 8-3. Reinke ended up going five innings, allowing three runs and seven hits. Todd Woelfel pitched two perfect innings finishing off Finlandia. The game opened up in the bottom of the sixth as the Cougars scored nine runs on nine hits, making the final score 17-3.
