Tim Ostby and Zach Gibson will represent Morris Area/Hancock/Chokio-Alberta at the Minnesota State High School Wrestling Tournament. The two Tigers placed second at the Section 3AA Individual Tournament in Luverne Saturday.
Ostby, a junior at Morris Areaw, placed second at 152 pounds. In the quarter finals he defeated Blake Altermatt of Wabasso Red Rock Central 4-2. In the semi-finals he upset the No. 2 seed Tim Larson of Windom/Mountain Lake-Butterfield-Odin by a fall in a time of 3:15. In the finals he lost to the No. 1 seed Codie Weeding of Dawson-Boyd/Lac Qui Parle Valley. He will enter the state tournament with a record of 30-9.
Gibson also placed second. He entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed. In the opening round he defeated Neil Litfin of Windom/Mountain Lake-Butterfield-Odin with a fall in 3:00. In the quarter-finals he defeated Levi Brummer of Tracy-Milroy-Balaton/Westbrook-Walnut Grove with a fall in 1:39. In the semi-finals he defeated Brett Bentele of Worthington 8-2. The finals was a rematch of the conference championship where Gibson claimed the title. This time Brandon Schmitt of Dawson-Boyd/Lac Qui Parle Valley defeated Gibson 3-2 in the third overtime period. This forced a true second match to determine the other state entrant. Gibson then defeated Colton Hines of Fairmont with a fall in 5:54. He will enter the state tournament with a record of 33-3.
Five other Tigers placed in the section tournament. Sophomores Evan Nelson at 112 pounds and Connor Metzger at 160 pounds, placed fourth. Nelson went 2-2 for the tournament and Metzger went 3-2.
Junior Tony Domnick at 135 pounds and senior Ryan Beyer at 189 pounds both placed fifth. Domnick went 3-2 for the tournament and Beyer went 2-2.
Freshmen Myles Smith placed sixth. He was 2-3 for the tournament.
Others in the tournament for the Tigers were: Travis Ostby at 103 pounds (0-2); Seth Nelson at 130 pounds (0-2); Jerid Berning at 140 pounds (0-2); Jordan Thooft at 145 pounds (1-2); and Joel Harrison at 215 pounds (0-2).
The individual state tournament will take place on March 4 and 5 at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
