Ostby brothers gain respect at NYWA state tourney

Brothers Tim and Travis Ostby participated in the Northland Youth Wrestling Association State Tournament held April 3-6 in Rochester.

Travis, a fourth grader, brought home the state title and eighth grader Tim came home with a medal for third place. The two combined for eight wins of nine matches wrestled at the state tourney. Five of their wins were pins in the first and second periods.

Travis wrestled in the 95-pound weight class in the grades 3-4 division.

Travis started strong pinning his first three opponents Saturday to earn a spot in the state finals Sunday.

In the championship match Travis wrestled Andy Bigelow of the KM Lightning to an 8-8 finish after three periods. In overtime Travis had a two-point takedown to win the match and the 2008 state championship.

Tim wrestled in the 130-pound class of the grades 7-8 division.

Tim pinned his first two opponents to advance to the semi-finals. There he faced Adam Josephson of Minneota, who he had wrestled in the individual section meet earlier in the season. Tim was injured in the first period, but toughed it out to lose 7-3. He went on to win his next two matches to take third in the state.

Josephson took second while Taylor Lewandowski of Foley took first.

Tim and Travis are the sons of Troy and Chayla Ostby of Morris.

Each wrestler who wishes to attend the NYWA State Tournament must begin the qualification process at the district level. There are 20 district qualifying tournaments throughout the state. The top two wrestlers in each weight class advance to the region qualifier.

The top three or four wrestlers from each weight class at regions then advance to state where medals are awarded through sixth place.
