Owl Volleyball team wins first match of season
The Hancock Owls volleyball team opened up their season with a home match against the Brandon-Evansville Chargers and came away with a 3-1 victory. Scores for the match were 26-24, 20-25, 25-18, 25-14.
The Owls started off slow having trouble with their passing and movement. The hitters did an excellent job working around their blockers and finding the open holes in the defense. They were able to get some serving runs in the last two sets to finish off the match with a win. Kendra Schmidgall led the way with 22 kills followed by Lauren Nelson and Courtney Greiner with five each. Aria Walstad ended the night with 30 set assists and led the team with 13 digs.
"It was a typical first match of the season where you have some jitters starting out the game," said coach Kristi Fehr. "We have some girls in there where this was their first real varsity action so it took a little while for the girls to gel together. I thought that they did a great job throughout the night keeping their composure and when we were able to get the ball passed to Aria our hitters did a great job hitting it down or finding the holes in the defense. We really need to improve on our blocking, passing, and communication which will come the more they play. Overall, I thought this was a great win against a really quality team."
The Owls travel to Graceville on Thursday for a conference match against Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley.
