Owls lose to state ranked CGB

September 25 found the Hancock Owls traveling to Graceville for a game with the No. 3 state-ranked CGB Wolverines. Hancock would fall in defeat 47-0. The first quarter started as a defensive battle between the foes as both exchanged punts on their first possessions. The first big break went go to CGB as Hancock fumbled on its second possession. The Wolverines took that opportunity to get on the board first with a 25 yard touchdown pass. Jake Ascheman picked off the two point conversion pass for the Owls and the score was 6 - 0. Both teams would grind out the rest of the quarter without any scoring.

CGB gained breathing space in the second quarter. The Owls started the quarter by throwing an interception. The Wolverines then began to pound the ball down the field using their running attack. The drive was capped on a 4 yard touchdown run. The Owls defense stiffened and once again stopped the two point conversion as the score went to 12 - 0. The Owls were forced to punt on their next possession. CGB scored for the third time as the second quarter wound down on a 27 yard touchdown pass. A successful two point conversion run left the Owls behind 20 - 0. Hancock again stalled on offense. CGB successfully mix the run and pass on its last possession of the half to score one more time. The Wolverines scored on a 1 yard touchdown run, the Owls stopped the two point conversion and the score stood at 26 - 0. Hancock had one last try to score before half. Mark Schaefer connected with Brendon Foss for a 39 yard pass, but the Owls ran out of time without a score. The halftime score stood at 26 - 0 in favor of CGB.

Hancock took the first possession of the third quarter, but CGB forced a punt. CGB then drove down the field using its rushing attack to eat up the yardage. The Wolverines opened the scoring of the second half on a 24 yard touchdown run. With a successful two point conversion, the score went to 34 - 0. CGB put the following kick off through the end zone and the Owls took over on their own 20 yard line. Hancock committed its third turnover of the day on a fumble, allowing CGB to take over deep in Owls territory. The Wolverines completed a 14 yard touchdown pass on that next possession and with a successful PAT kick, the score was 41-0. The Owls put a drive together on their next try, aided by a 50 yard reception by Brendon Foss. However, the CGB defense stiffen and the Owls turned the ball over on downs. CGB ended the scoring thanks to a 40 yard screen pass. Wade Feuchtenberger blocked the PAT kick for the Owls.

The defenses once again took control in the fourth as neither team scored. Hancock's last chance to get on the board came following a Wolverine fumble recovered by Wade Feuchtenberger. The CGB defense was up to the challenge though as the shut out was preserved. Coach Matt Hone commented, "We have to take this game as a learning experience. CGB is one of the best teams in the state". With the win, CGB goes to 4 - 0 and the Owls fall to 0 - 4 on the season. Next up for the Owls will be their Oct. 2 Homecoming game against Brandon-Evansville in a 7 p.m. game.
