March 1, 1935-Jan. 17, 2008
Former area resident Patricia J. Duffney, 72, of Spencer, Iowa, died Thursday, January 17, 2008, at the Longhouse Residence in Spencer.
Patricia Josephine Peters, the daughter of Lloyd and Winifred (Sain) Peters, was born March 1, 1935, in Lincoln, Neb. In September 1938, her family moved to Mason City, Iowa, where Patricia received her education, graduating in 1953. She attended a girl's school in Alton, Ill., on an art scholarship. During the following summer, she attended Mason City Junior College, and received a teacher's certificate in August 1955. She taught in Reinbeck, Sigourney and Rudd, Rockford, Marble Rock and Alton schools.
On June 9, 1963 Patricia married Lloyd Duffney in Robbinsdale, Minn. They continued to teach at St. James Military School until the end of the summer of 1970, when they moved to Ada, Minn., where they lived until 1977. Patricia worked for the Minnesota Deptartment of Human Services. Due to educational budget cuts in Minnesota, her husband received a full time teaching job in Nebraska and moved to Indianola, Neb. They later moved back to New Providence, Iowa, to be house parents at Quakerdale. In 1981 they moved to Spencer, when Pat was hired by Clay County Dept of Human Services, where she worked until her retirement in 1995. She moved to Longhouse Residence in 1998 due to failing health. Patricia was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church. She enjoyed reading, puzzles, loved her cats, and most of all, Patricia enjoyed being with family and friends.
Left to cherish her memory are Patricia's husband, Lloyd, of Spencer; two sons, David Duffney and Ed Duffney (fiancé' Jill), both of Spencer; one daughter, Erin Duffney of Sheldon, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; one sister, Sandra Horne, confined to a nursing home; as well as other relatives and friends.
