"We've been knocking on the door for a few years. Now we've finally broken through."

What Perham Activities Director Fred Sailer was refering to in that statement was how close Perham has been to winning the Minnesota State High School League Challenge Cup in the previous four years the award has been handed out. This year, Perham won the Class A?Challenge Cup.

The Challenge Cup is an award given out by the high school league, honoring excellence at the state level of MSHSL?sponsored events , both athletic and academic (See Page 3B?for more on the Challenge Cup).

"It's all about excellence, whether that be in the classroom, on the field or on a stage," Sailer said about the Challenge Cup. "It recognizes excellence in a measureable way. It shows in fine arts and athletics, good things are happening here."

Since it's inception for the 2003-04 school year, Perham has been the Class A?runner-up twice (2004-05, 2006-07), and they have been the top public school three of th four years.

In all four years, a private school has taken top honors.

"It does make a difference to be the first public school to win," Sailer added. "Typically, there are 6-8 private schools each year in the top-10, and each year the winner (in Class A)?has been a private school. I?think it says a lot for our programs."

For Sailer, and all associated with the Yellowjackets Activities program, winning this award is more than just about winning programs on the fields, but off of them too.

"If it was just about winning, that would be kind of shallow," Sailer said. "It's about participation, behavior, representing the school and community in a class way."

Sailer went on to say the coaches and staff take great pride in the fact that they are producing quality kids, who don't get caught up in bragging or silly competition between teams.

"The kids are really pulling for each other, cheering for each other," Sailer said. "When one team has success, they don't hold it over the athletes from other sports. ?They help lift them up. Encourage them to try to get to that next level."

Although the Challenge Cup only recognizes activities at the State level, Perham has had other substantial success in other sports and activities as well. An important example to make is that of boys basketball coach Dave Cresap. Cresap has been working in the off-season with athletes from all sports on speed and acceleration. Three days a week with up to 90 kids taking part.

"This is a success that should be enjoyed by everyone involved with Perham activities," Sailer said. "This is about a lot of people, not just the ones who show up on the Challenge Cup."

Sailer mentioned (and the author agrees) that some additional activities should be added to the Challenge Cup standings, especially some in the academic arena. Currently, band and choir have section competitions, but not a state competition. So they are not included in the Challenge Cup. Sailer mentioned there was some discussion of the MSHSL getting involved in Mock Trial.

"I'd like to see all extra curricular activities some get included," Sailer said. "But I?understand the feasibility of that in a measureable scale like the CC may be difficult.

Award presentation

Sailer said the school would hold a celebration to honor the athletes, coaches, support staff and fans. The event is tentatively set for Aug. 29, the night of the Yellowjackets first football game of the 2008 season. There will be a tailgate party with a live band prior to Perham taking on Pelican Rapids. The Challenge Cup will be presented at halftime of the game.

In addition to the celebration at the football game, the school is planning on putting up a billboard to promote the honor and the school's accomplishment.
