Rex A. Varnum, age 86, of Caledonia, died Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2009, at Caledonia Care and Rehab.
He was born Dec. 30, 1922, in Little Falls, to George and Edna (Beimel) Varnum. He attended the School of Agriculture at the University of Minnesota in Morris. On Sept. 5, 1943, Rex married Selma Blair in Morris, and they were blessed with three daughters. In 1961, they moved to Fargo, N.D., where Rex worked in sales for Crane Plumbing and Heating. Rex and Selma then moved to Mankato, where they owned and operated a Coast to Coast Hardware Store. In 1987, they moved to Caledonia to enjoy their retirement. Even in retirement, Rex went to work at the Caledonia Coast to Coast Store which then became the True Value Hardware Store. On June 13, 2008, Selma preceded Rex in death.
Survivors include three daughters, Lyn (Lavaine) Diersen of Caledonia, Kay (Jerry) Moser of Wheat Ridge, Colo., and Jean (Rolf) Schroeder of Rochester; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Marilyn Varnum of Morris; one aunt, Ella Coleman of Minneapolis; and nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, Rex was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, James and Ken Varnum; and one sister-in-law, Ruth Varnum.
Funeral services will be Saturday, Aug. 29, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. at St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church, 650 N. Kingston St. in Caledonia. Rev. Tom Schultz will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Caledonia at a later date. Friends may call at the church on Saturday from 12 p.m. until the time of service. Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Home of Caledonia is in charge of arrangements.
