Season ends for Tiger girls
The season came to an end for the Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta girls' basketball team Saturday with a 60-55 loss to Osakis in the sub-section semi-final game at the University of Minnesota, Morris.
Following the game, Minnewaska Area defeated West Central Area 58-34 to advance to the Section 6AA West final Tuesday at UMM, where the Lakers will face Osakis.
"It certainly didn't end the way we wanted, but Osakis simply played a little bit better than we did tonight," said coach Ken Gagner. "It doesn't diminish what these young ladies accomplished and the late game heroics in the YME, WCA, ACGC, and Minnewaska games will be remembered for years to come."
The Tigers trailed by three at halftime and the game stayed close the rest of the way. With 53 seconds remaining, the Tigers were down by two and could not get closer.
"We only had six turnovers on the night and we shot 14 of 17 from the charity stripe, but we just couldn't convert on the outside," said Gagner. The Tigers shot just 33 percent from the floor, their second lowest for the season.
"A lot of those shots were in the cylinder and just would not go down," added Gagner.
"You have to credit the Silverstreaks for not allowing anything easy and for hitting the shots when they needed," added Gagner.
The Tigers were led in scoring by Megan Dierks with 18 and Jenna Nelson with 14.
Dierks also had a team-high eight rebounds, followed by Nelson and Alissa Melberg with four apiece.
Heather Gagner and Nelson each dished out four assists.
Gagner also led the Tigers with two steals.
Also scoring for the Tigers were Mary Rentz, Nicole Gillespie, and Stafanie Strobel with six apiece, Melberg with four, and Gagner with one.
