Smith takes title at conference meet

Four Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta runners earned All-West Central Conference honors Tuesday at Koronis Hills Golf Club in Paynesville.

The Tigers' Makenzie Smith was the girls' medalist taking first, while Rachel Rausch placed 10th and Savannah Aanerud finished 12th.

Smith won the West Central South individual medal last year as a junior.

Aaron Goulet led the boys, finishing fourth.

The top 14 places are named all-conference.

The boys' medalist was Jacob Carroll of Yellow Medicine East.

Montevideo and Lac Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd won the team titles.

Makenzie Smith posted a winning time of 15:57 running far out front. Next came LQPV/DB runners Alaysia Freetly in 16:26 and Kelly Kvaal in 16:35.

Rausch had a time of 17:18 and Aanerud finished in 17:29. Also running for the Tigers were Becca Holland in 24th place, Tahni Jungst taking 30th, Adrianela Mendez in 32nd, and Miranda Day in 35th.

The Eagle/Blackjacks rung up 28 points for the title, followed by Montevideo with 52, Benson/K-M-S with 72, Morris/C-A with 77.

Ryan Maroney in second led six Thunder Hawks in the first 11 to the line at the end of the 5,000-meter race.

Carroll finished in 17:59 and Maroney in 18:06. Another T-Hawk, Zac Enevoldsen, placed third in 18:11.

Goulet finished with a time of 18:17. Ryan Gray placed 17th, Roy Reese took 24th, Max Jerke placed 28th, Beau Keimig finished 40th, Eric Staebler placed 42nd, and Matt Ohren finished 44th.

After Monte (28 points) in first, five teams had a spirited fight for second. BOLD, with just the minimum five runners, came in at 101 points. Four teams finished from 104 to 113 points, with Morris/C-A taking sixth.

Three Tigers ran in the boys' 5000-meter junior varsity run. Ben Folkman finished 28th in 24:36, Garner Swenson placed 31st in 25:15, and Chris Tiernan was 35th in 25:53.

The only Tiger running in the junior high race was Dylan DeToy, who finished ninth with a time of 11:07.
