WinterFest 2009 started last weekend with the Green Lake Radar Runs and Hawkeye Helicopter rides. Most of the festivities begin this weekend and the winter celebration stretches until Feb. 7.

Starting with Westwood Café's "All You Can Eat" Fish Fry at 4 p.m. Friday and Melvin's annual Art Exhibit and Wine Tasting at 6 p.m. Friday, WinterFest will turn into high gear Saturday with Dad's Waffle Feed and the Frozen 5K Run/Walk in the morning hours.

Changing from last year, the third annual WinterFest Softball Tournament will start at 9 a.m. Saturday instead of a couple weeks into the celebration. Also new to the festival is the Biggest Loser Spicer edition contest, which will be held at Spicer's new Snap Fitness in the Green Lake Mall.

Saturday afternoon will welcome the WinterFest Bonfire at 3 p.m., the snow-kiters race and the Apple Wine Extravaganza at Glacial Ridge Winery. Saturday evening will be capped off by the lighting of the Spicer Ice Castle at 7 p.m. and a fireworks display.

The next weekend will be highlighted by the Jan. 31 Polar Bear Plunge into Green Lake. And the Spicer American Legion omelette breakfast starting at 8 a.m. Feb. 1.

The final weekend of WinterFest will showcase the annual Lion's Fishing Derby Feb. 7 along with the ECFE Kid's Olympics and Texas Hold 'em Tournament.

Throughout the celebration, WinterFest family skating and open hockey will be available at the Prairie Meadows ice skating rink. WinterFest-goers will also enjoy the Spicer ice castle and ice slide each day of the winter festival.
