A review of happenings and upcoming events at St. Mary’s School in Morris
Kindergarten: What a week we had. We celebrated being 100 days smarter! We worked with the letter “E” this week and added some new words to our word list. We got to meet Miss Midwest and have some fun with her. We also got the opportunity to do some cool science experiments with some UMM students.
Grade 1: This week we are working with words with the long /e/ sound made by the letters –e. –ee, ea- and –ie. In math we are working with picture graphs and analyzing and comparing data. Tuesday was the 100th day of school and we graphed 100 M&Ms with a partner. We had a special visit from Miss Midwest, Chelsea Swiggum, on Wednesday morning and she talked to us about the importance of being active to stay healthy. Wednesday afternoon we had a presentation about dental health from the Morris Dental Clinic. We loved the weather this week.
Grade 2: In math class this week we learned the value of a quarter and a dollar. We practiced many ways to make those amounts using other coins. We also reviewed our subtraction facts and began learning to subtract two digit numbers using several different methods. In science class we are discussing ways we can protect our earth. We spent time talking about conserving our resources by recycling, reusing and reducing what we use.
Grade 3: It has been great to have a week where we were in school each day. We have really been enjoying the warmer temperatures and are so glad to be able to get outside for recess and PE again. In math we did some more work with word problems and also worked with square numbers. We completed our illustrations for our Studentreasures book and got them completed. Miss Midwest visited our school on Wednesday and we enjoyed her presentation. Congratulations to Neil and Glenda Feist who bid on and won our classroom project at the dinner last Saturday evening.
Grade 4: The students are starting a new unit in math on patterns in multiplication. In social studies we finished a unit on the northeast and will be starting to learn about the southeast. We had the opportunity to have Officer Anita Liebl come to our room and visit with us about cyber bullying. It was a very important and informative talk. We also had a visit from Miss Midwest. The kids had a great time and enjoyed asking her a lot of great questions.
Grade 5 and 6: The sixth graders stared a new chapter in math and learned about making tables, and the mean, median, mode and range. The fifth graders are continuing to work with fractions and mixed numbers in different types of problems. On Wednesday the fifth and sixth graders enjoyed having Officer Anita visit the school and talk with them about bullying. Also, on Wednesday the students enjoyed a visit from Miss Midwest and her presentation on being active and healthy.
Principals Notes: I think we are finally at the end of the frigid weather and full weeks of school again.
This week we had our lockdown with intruder and offset that with Leila’s delicious 100th day Rice Krispie bars. Police officer, Anita Liebl, gave a presentation on internet safety to drades 4 through 6. Today we have beautiful Miss Midwest visiting our classroom to talk about leadership qualities. Tomorrow we have priest’s visitation to classrooms. Friday afternoon All-School Prayer, and Principal Pride essays are due.
Kindergarten Round-Up will be held on March 21 from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at St. Mary’s School Gym. Check out our school that prides themselves with high academics and a tremendous faith-based education.
