Kindergarten: This was M week and it was marvelous! We worked with the letter “M” all week and on Thursday our mommies came in early for Mommy and Muffins. Thanks moms for all you do! We also learned a new word to read----. In math we worked on some matching and practicing our numbers. We can’t believe it is October and we have our first month of school in.
Grade 1: We had a great week. We worked on solving addition equations with pictures in math. We read about how we grow and change in reading and worked with words with the short /i/ sound. In social studies we talked about our rights and responsibilities. In science we are beginning to learn about how plants grow and change. We made it to the public library this week, also. We are really becoming good first grade workers.
Grade 2: In science this week, we began a unit on animals. We have been learning to classify groups of animals as mammals, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and fish. We have also classified animals as those with backbones and those without backbones. We are adding three one digit numbers in math class. We are also comparing numbers using the less than/greater than symbols. We are looking forward to our field trip to SWELL next week.
Grade 3: The third graders enjoyed their day off on Monday while the teachers attended Ministry Day in St. Cloud. The rest of the week found us busy completing our first chapter in math and beginning a mini unit on perimeter and measurement. We will also work with quadrilaterals, parallelograms, rectangles, and squares. In religion we are learning about the rosary and we will practice saying it as we learn more about the prayer. We are looking forward to the firemen visiting St. Mary’s on Oct. 8 and appreciate their service to the Morris Area. Grandparent and Special Friend’s Day is Friday, Oct. 11. Mass will begin at 10:45 a.m. and after lunch we will present a program for all our guests. St. Mary’s will be having a Scholastic Book Fair all week so stop in if there is a book you are in need of for a child.
Grade 4: It has been another busy week in fourth grade. We had Monday off so the teachers could attend a Diocesan Ministry in St. Cloud. We took our NWEA math tests. In reading class we are reading an excerpt from Because of Winn Dixie and really enjoying it. In social studies we are starting to create our Flat Stanleys and will start to send them around the United States. We are very excited about the adventures our Flat Stanleys will have!
Grade 5 and 6: The fifth and sixth graders are doing wonderful! In science we are continuing to learn about cells and classifying life. On Tuesday we had two students bring in a large mushroom which we enjoyed looking at and talking about. In math the fifth graders are working with multi-step problems and sixth graders are working with inverse operations in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division problems. On Wednesday grades four through sixth were trained by Fr. Todd on how to serve for church and the students are looking forward to helping.
