St. Mary's Samplings 110913
A review of happenings and upcoming events at St. Mary’s School in Morris
Kindergarten: It was a short week this week with Thursday and Friday off due to conferences—hard to believe we have nine weeks in already. We reviewed the S and P letters and sounds and all our words we have had. In math we are working on patterns and are finding patterns everywhere!
Grade 1: Well, it was a short week but we were busy working very hard. We reviewed the short /o/, short /a/ and short /i/ sounds this week. We finished up our second chapter in science about how plants grow and change and we are ready to move on to learning about animals. In social studies we learned about transportation and shelter and how these things are affected by where we live. We also started learning a little bit about Veterans Day. Thanks to all the veterans who have served our country.
Grade 2: We have enjoyed spending more of our reading time this week reading our Accelerated Reading books and taking quizzes on them. We also finished our unit on the introduction to habitats and food chains, and we are planning to take a quiz on the information we learned next week. We are excited to begin our mission project of making Thanksgiving table favors for the Senior Center. We are also beginning our food collection for the Food Shelf next week.
Grade 3: We had a short week but continued our work with comparing numbers in math. We also worked with money values and represented money amounts in different ways. We took our second AR Star reading test and set our new reading goal for the second nine weeks. We all took our report cards home on Wednesday and our parents have the opportunity to come to school to visit about our progress during conferences. We want to thank all veterans for their sacrifice and are grateful to them for their service. We will have a Veterans Day prayer service on Monday, Nov. 11. We invite any veteran that would like to come to join us in the gym at 2:30 p.m.
Grade 4: It is hard to believe that the first quarter is over already. The fourth graders were busy on this short week. We started a unit on geometry and learned about congruency and symmetry. We did a fun art project relating to math using symmetry. We finished our first unit in social studies and will begin learning more about our government and how it runs in our next unit. We are really enjoying getting postcards from our Flat Stanley project–we have visited South Dakota, North Dakota, Indiana, Montana, and Colorado!
Grade 5 and 6: First quarter is already over. It was a short week this week due to conferences but we still did a lot of work in our room. The sixth graders continued to work with decimals and solving decimal equations. The fifth graders also have been working with decimals and have been working with numbers to the billions and billionths place values. In reading we are learning about the genre informational nonfiction and will read a story next week about sea turtles. In science we are learning about classifying animals into simple invertebrates and complex invertebrates.
Upcoming Events St. Mary’s is celebrating our veterans at our Veterans Prayer Service at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 11. Mrs. Fischer’s class, Grade 1, is preparing our all-school prayer service. We are all enjoying the freedoms that they fought so hard for. On Tuesday we have evening conferences from 4 to 8 p.m. We are looking forward to the Parade of Lights at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 14. Our playhouse will be in the parade displayed with lights.
