St. Mary's Samplings
Kindergarten: Happy New Year! We are glad to be back at school and eager to learn! We have made some New Year's resolutions. We all promised to really try hard to keep them! This week we worked with the letter O and the word "is". Mrs. Sayles is glad we didn't forget a thing!
Grade 1: Well, we are trying to get back into the swing of things after our vacation. We had a hard spelling unit this week with -tch, ch- and wh- words. We read about how people around the world make and use masks. In science we are starting our unit on earth science and we are learning about what the earth looks like. In social studies we are learning about national holidays and heroes. We finished up our unit on two-digit addition in math and took our test this week. Happy New Year to everyone!
Grade 2: The second graders have made some New Year's resolutions that will help us in 2012. We are working very hard to make them a habit and not break them. In math, we are working on skip counting by 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, 6s, 7s, 8s, and 9s. We are also learning to find a skip counting pattern in a group of numbers. In reading class, we read a story about the creation of books. It was interesting to find out that sometimes an author and an illustrator do not work together when creating a book. Once the author finishes writing the book, someone else may draw the illustrations without any input from the author.
Grade 3: Happy New Year! We were all glad to get back to school after a wonderful Christmas break! In math we added the threes and fours to our multiplication and division work and used our new multiplication skills to solve problems with area. Or spelling unit was about homophones (words that sound the same but are spelled differently and have different meanings) and we were amazed at how many words there are. We are going to make a list of them and see how many we can think of in the next few weeks. Our school theme this month is to think of words about our "self" in a positive way. For some reason many people have difficulty doing this and we all need to remember how special and unique we have been created!
Grade 4: This has been a busy week getting back into the swing of things. We have started to write our own plays for reading class. We are busy working in writing teams creating a play with a theme. One theme is "how to be a good friend." In math class we are wrapping up a unit on subtracting very large numbers.
Grade 5: This week in reading class we are working on creating our very own plays. We have a theme or a lesson that we need to teach in this play. We are going to videotape the final project and put it on our classroom website to share with our parents. We have also been learning about fractions. We have learned how to compare fractions and will also learn how to find common denominators.
Grade 6: This week we are preparing for our trip to the Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center. We will be leaving on Monday. We began our preparation for our sixth grade science fair which will take place on March 19. We are in the process of choosing a topic. During math we are collecting and analyzing data.
