St. Mary's Samplings
Kindergarten: We worked with the sound Ch this week. We also went to the UMM and got to paint with Michael Eble, he is an artist and Miles' dad. Michael is going to be showing his work in New Orleans, La. June 2 - July 31. We wish him the best of luck. We got to visit with the seniors that had gone to St. Mary's and watch the annual kick ball game!
Grade 1: In social studies we learned about buyers and sellers and saving money by putting it in the bank. In science we are learning about solids and the properties of solids. This week we started a unit in math about analyzing story problems and we are working on finding missing numbers in equations. In reading we worked on reading some chapter books and keeping reading journals about that we read in each chapter. We had alumni day on Wednesday, where we welcomed back the St. Mary's graduating seniors. They attended mass and lunch with us and participated in the kickball game.
Grade 2: We are reading stories told by people of long ago that explain the natural world around them. Our stories explained why the sun and moon are in the sky, and why the sky is up high above the earth. We are also taking our last spelling test of the year using words with r controlled vowels. In math class, we are reviewing metric measurement and we will be working with 3D shapes.
Grade 3: In math the third graders worked with grid maps, located and identified points on a coordinate map, and completed plane figures on a coordinate grid by naming missing ordered pairs. They realized that they were pretty good at it since they had been doing some of the same things in daily geography all year. They completed their Basic Aid Training with Mrs. Folkman and took their test. We invite you all to attend the spring concert on Thursday, May 24 at 7 p.m. at Assumption Church. It is all about "Bugs".
Grade 4: We are listening to the story "Holes" written by Louis Sachar. It is a great story and we recommend it to anyone looking for a good book to read! We also are learning how to simplify fractions. We have decided that fractions are kind of fun! We appreciate that Anita Liebel stopped in to teach us how to handle bad weather situations.
Grade 5: We are listening to the book, The Wednesday Wars, by Gary D. Schmidt. We are really enjoying the humor in this book and can understand how it won the Newbery Honor Medal. We had a fun time visiting with our senior alumnus who visited us this week. We wish them the best of luck in their futures.
Grade 6: On Wednesday we enjoyed hosting the former St. Mary's students that will be graduating high school. Following Mass and lunch, we challenged them to a kickball game in which we won. We also began creating a cross made of burned matches. In math we are adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing positive and negative integers.
