Kindergarten: We worked with the letter Rr this week and did a lot of reading! As of March 1, 2011 we have a leprechaun in our classroom---it has changed everything to green and is up to lots of shenanigans. We are trying very hard to catch it so we can split the gold! This month our school theme is Be Positive with Your Body Language---that's hard sometimes.

Grade 1: This week we started a new math unit about reading graphs and comparing data.  We are learning how to make our own picture graphs and compare information with them.  We started a new unit in Social Studies about how our country has changed over time. In Science we talked about how erosion and weathering can change land and rocks.

Grade 2: In math the second graders started working with money. They combined pennies, nickels, and dimes to make quarters, explored combinations of coins to equal one dollar, and used different methods to find partners of 100. Father Peter came in and taught an art lesson where each person drew a small section of a larger picture. You put the parts together and if all have followed directions the larger picture looks like it should.

Grade 3: In math the third graders expanded their multiplication and division to the 11's and 12's and also worked with square numbers. We used graph paper to illustrate and cut all the square numbers to 10. We also worked to solve and understand complex multi-step word problems!

Grade 4: The fourth graders celebrated Dr. Seuss's birthday by watching a video about the life of Theodore Giesel as an author.  We learned that he had difficulties getting some of his first books published even though today his writings are well known by children everywhere.

Grade 5: We started a new unit in math this last week. We are learning how to find the volume of rectangular prisms, and we have also been learning about relating length, area, and volume. In reading we are learning how to use the correct punctuation.

Grade 6: This week our focus in Spelling was using words from many cultures. In preparation for the 2011 Iditarod Sled Dog race we each chose two mushers to follow. We created a "Meet the Musher" poster for each and will check daily the location, distance from start, percent of trail complete, and the checkpoint temperature. The Iditarod begins in Alaska on Sunday.
