March 20, 1930-Dec. 30, 2007
Stanley J. Hamernik, 77, of rural Ulen, died in his home on Sunday, December 30, 2007.
Stanley Joseph Hamernik was born the son of Frank and Aloise (Dvorak) Hamernik on March 20, 1930, in Walworth Township, on the family farm. He was baptized at Detroit Lakes, and confirmed his faith at Aspelund Lutheran Church, Flom, Minn. As a young boy he grew up on the family farm in section 9 of Walworth Township. He attended country school at District 54, and graduated with the class of 1949 from Ulen High School.
Stanley entered the Armed Forces in 1951, serving his country during the Korean War. Upon his honorable discharge in 1955, Stanley farmed with his father for three years. On Oct. 11, 1958, Stanley married Jean Matson at Jevnaker Lutheran Church near Borup, Minn. The couple took over the family farm, where they milked cows, raised livestock and farmed small grains. It was also here that they raised their family of six children: Kevin, Julie, Patty, Daniel, Stephanie and Jason.
Stanley served on the Walworth Town Board as clerk for 36 years, and was a charter member of the Flom Area Lions Club, where he served as treasurer. He also served on the church council and was an active member of the Flom-Twin Valley VFW Post 3818. He and Jean retired from farming in 1997, rented out the farm land, and continued to reside on the home place.
During his retirement years, Stanley enjoyed working part time for a neighboring farmer. His hobbies included outdoor activities, such a gardening and yard work. He also enjoyed visiting with family and friends, but Stanley treasured the time spent with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Stanley is survived by his wife of 49 years, Jean Hamernik of Ulen; sons, Kevin Hamernik (fiancé Feroll Haakenson) of Audubon, Daniel Hamernik of Glyndon and Jason (Mandy) Hamernik of Ulen; daughters, Julie (Garrett) Thornton of Twin Valley, Patty Boreen of Twin Valley and Stephanie (Ryan) Olson of Ulen; 15 grandchildren and two great grandchildren; brothers, Frank Jr. (Marlys) Hamernik of Eagan, Minn., and Edward (Arlene) Hamernik of Fridley, Minn.; sisters, Irene Klemetson of Ulen, Betty (Robert) Baukol of Moorhead, Helen (Marvin) Slette of Mahnomen and Georgia (Carl) Fuchs of Fertile, Minn.; sister-in-law, Colleen Hamernik of Ulen; brother-in-law, Harland Erickson of Detroit Lakes; as well as several nieces and nephews.
