State Boys’ Swimming and Diving Meet: St. Thomas Academy, Eden Prairie, 10 individuals to defend titles

St. Thomas Academy of Mendota Heights (Class A) and Eden Prairie (Class AA) are both looking for their second consecutive team titles this year.

St. Thomas Academy won two individual events last year and in the process outdistanced the runners-up from Monticello by more than 100 points. This year the Cadets have qualifiers in every event except 1-meter diving.      

The Eden Prairie Eagles are returning competitors to every event this year. The Eagles won five events in 2012, and when their points were tallied they outscored Maple Grove by 108.5 points.      

In Class A, five individual champions and teams representing all three relay champions return from the 2012 meet. There are also five individual returning champions in Class AA, and two relay-winning teams will attempt to defend those titles.      

Following are highlights of the 2013 State Boys’ Swimming and Diving Meet that will be conducted Thursday, February 28, through Saturday, March 2, at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis.        

200-Yard Medley Relay      

Class A — Six teams that earned medals at the 2012 meet are returning this year. Breck/Blake, the four-time defending champion, is the highest returning qualifier. The other teams are: St. Thomas Academy, third; Montevideo, fourth; Fergus Falls, fifth; Grand Rapids, sixth; and Chisago Lakes Area of Lindstrom, seventh. Sartell-St. Stephen has the best qualifying time of 1:38.96.      

Class AA — Six relay teams from the 2012 field return. Eden Prairie, which finished fifth last year, has the fastest qualifying time of 1:32.23. The other returning teams are: Minnetonka, runner-up; Edina, third; Maple Grove, fourth; East Ridge of Woodbury, sixth; and Prior Lake, seventh.        

200-Yard Freestyle      

Class A — Two-time defending champion Paul Fair of Monticello returns in search of more gold. Four other medalists also return from the 2012 field: Mohab Eid of Richfield, third; Michael McLain of Willmar, fifth; Michael Berg of St. Thomas Academy, sixth; and Kris Aaseng of Alexandria, eighth. Colter Allen of Fridley owns the fastest qualifying time of 1:44.68.      

Class AA — Last year’s champion Noah Lucas of Mounds View returns to defend his title. He will face tough competition from Jonathan Lieberman of Eden Prairie, who placed third last year. Lieberman has the best qualifying time of 1:40.96.        

200-Yard Individual Medley      

Class A — Defending champion Mitchell Foster of Breck/Blake is the highest returning qualifier. He also owns this year’s best qualifying time of 1:56.41. Two additional 2012 medalists also return: Andy Petersen of Richfield, third; and Robert Schultze of Mankato East/Loyola, eighth.      

Class AA — Two medal-winners return from the 2012 field: Jackson Lindell of Edina, runner-up; and Colby Smith of Hastings, seventh. Lindell has the best qualifying time of 1:54.02.        

50-Yard Freestyle      

Class A — Paul Fair of Monticello returns in search of his second consecutive title. He will face competition from four other 2012 medal-winners: Mohab Eid of Richfield, third; Michael McLain of Willmar, fifth; Michael Berg of St. Thomas Academy, sixth; and Kris Aaseng of Alexandria, eighth. Colter Allen of Fridley has the fastest qualifying time of 1:44.68.      

Class AA — Defending champion Aaron Greenberg of Eden Prairie, who has this year’s best qualifying time of 20.82, leads a field of four returning medalists. The others are: Buzz Rehnberg of Edina, third; Bryce Boston of Eden Prairie, sixth; and Spencer Whyte of North of North St. Paul, eighth.        

1-Meter Diving      

Class A — Two medal-winners return from the 2012 field: Tyler Jordahl of Mound Westonka, fourth; and Joe McGrath of Hill-Murray of Maplewood, fifth.      

Class AA — Keith Krawza of Eagan is the only returning medalist. He placed seventh in 2012.        

100-Yard Butterfly      

Class A — Two-time defending champion Paul Fair of Monticello returns in search of his third consecutive title. Three other medalists also return: Colter Allen of Fridley, runner-up; Alec Kandt of Simley of Inver Grove Heights, third; and Joe Kitzman of Fergus Falls, fourth. Allen owns the fastest qualifying time of 51.03.      

Class AA — Bryce Boston of Eden Prairie, who placed third last year, leads this year’s field. He also has the best qualifying time of 49.92. The three other returning medalists are: Colby Smith of Hastings, fifth; Jenia Foster of Eden Prairie, sixth; and Marshall Heskin of Prior Lake, eighth.        

100-Yard Freestyle      

Class A — Evan Lahr of Monticello, who earned runner-up honors last year, is the highest returning qualifier. He will be joined by four other returning medalists: Luke Schneeman of St. Thomas Academy, fourth; Mohab Eid of Richfield, sixth; Michael McLain of Willmar, seventh; and Jack Fair of Monticello, eighth. Schneeman has the fastest qualifying time of 47.67.      

Class AA — Four medal-winners, including defending champion Aaron Greenberg of Eden Prairie, return in this event. The others are: Noah Busch of Minnetonka, runner-up; Mike Solfelt of Eden Prairie, sixth; and Sheldon Hatlen of Rosemount, seventh. Greenberg owns the best qualifying time of 46.06.        

500-Yard Freestyle      

Class A — The two-time defending champion, Tanner Alms of Red Wing, returns with the best qualifying time of 4:47.81. Four additional medalists from last year also return: Michael Berg of St. Thomas Academy, third; Kris Aaseng of Alexandria, fourth; Jeremy Conners of St. Thomas Academy, fifth; and Hunter Nielsen of St. Thomas Academy, sixth.      

Class AA — Defending champion Noah Lucas of Mounds View leads the field of five returning medal-winners. The others are: Jonathan Lieberman of Eden Prairie, runner-up; Mitch Herrera of Lakeville South, fourth; Cole Birklid of Anoka, sixth; and Matt Hedman of Anoka, eighth. Lieberman owns the fastest qualifying time of 4:33.32.        

200-Yard Freestyle Relay      

Class A — The two-time defending champions from Monticello, who have the best qualifying time of 1:27.98, lead the field of five returning teams. The other medal-winning entries are: St. Thomas Academy, runner-up; Richfield, third; Fridley, sixth; and Breck/Blake, eighth.      

Class AA — Seven medal-winning teams return to this year’s meet, led by defending champion Eden Prairie. The Eagles also own the fastest qualifying time of 1:25.36. The other returning teams are: Rosemount, runner-up; Maple Grove, third; Stillwater Area, fourth; Mounds View, fifth; Edina, seventh; and Rochester Century, eighth.        

100-Yard Backstroke      

Class A — Two-time defending champion Mitchell Foster of Breck/Blake leads this year’s field of four returning medal-winners. The other returning medalists are: Cole Bateman of Hutchinson, runner-up; Mitchell Miller of Orono, sixth; and Andy Carlisle of Grand Rapids, eighth. Bateman has the best qualifying time of 51.17.      

Class AA — Defending champion Noah Busch of Minnetonka leads the field of four returning medalists. Busch also has the fastest qualifying time of 51.48. The other returning medal-winners are: Nikita Dolin of Rochester Century, fifth; Dan Bielski of Minnetonka, sixth; and Alex Jenness of Prior Lake, seventh.        

100-Yard Breaststroke      

Class A — Eric Dahlseng of Dassel-Cokato/Litchfield, who earned runner-up honors last year, is the highest returning qualifier. Two other 2012 medal-winners also return: Alec Kandt of Simley, third; and Zach Litwin of St. Thomas Academy, sixth. Kandt has the fastest qualifying time of 58.62.      

Class AA — Three medalists return in this event: Ben Albert of Burnsville, runner-up; Griffin Back of Eden Prairie, tied for sixth; and Corey Lau of Hopkins, eighth. Albert has the best qualifying time of 57.69.        

400-Yard Freestyle Relay      

Class A — All eight of the 2012 medal-winning teams return: two time-defending champion Monticello; St. Thomas Academy, runner-up; Detroit Lakes, third; Red Wing, fourth; Grand Rapids, fifth; Fergus Falls, sixth; Breck/Blake, seventh, and Fridley, eighth. Monticello owns the best qualifying time of 3:15.12.      

Class AA — Eden Prairie, which won this event last year, returns in search of more gold. The Eagles also have the fastest qualifying time of 3:06.56.

Six additional medal-winning teams from 2012 also return: Maple Grove, runner-up; Minnetonka, third; Edina, fourth; Stillwater Area, fifth; Rosemount, sixth; and Hastings, eighth.        

Schedule and Ticket Information      

This year’s state meet will start on Thursday, Feb. 28, and run through Saturday, March 2. All events will take place at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.       The Class A one-meter diving preliminaries, the first five of eight dives for the state meet, will begin at noon on Thursday, followed by the Class AA diving preliminaries at 6:00 p.m. The Class A swimming preliminaries begin at noon on Friday, followed by the Class AA swimming preliminaries at 6 p.m. The Class A championship finals of all events begin at noon on Saturday, followed by the Class AA finals at 6 p.m.      

Tickets will be available at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. Prices are $5.00 for both students and adults for the diving preliminaries, and $8.00 for both students and adults for the swimming preliminaries and for the swimming and diving finals.
