State Girls’ Gymnastics Meet: Melrose Area, Roseville Area to defend team titles

State Girls’ Gymnastics Meet: Melrose Area, Roseville Area to defend team titles

      Both Melrose Area (Class A) and Roseville Area (Class AA) return to defend their 2012 titles when the 2013 State Girls’ Gymnastics Meet opens at the Sports Pavilion on the University of Minnesota campus on Friday, Feb. 22. Six other qualifying teams also return from last year’s Class A field. In Class AA, four additional teams return from the 2012 field.

      Sela Fadness of Austin is the only Class A individual champion returning to defend her title. She is looking for her second consecutive title in floor exercise.

      New individual champions will emerge in all of the Class AA events.

      Class A Highlights

      The defending champions from Melrose Area return with five gymnasts who competed in the state meet last year. Six additional teams that competed in the 2012 team competition also return: New Prague, runner-up; Big Lake, third; Perham, fourth; Austin, fifth; Jackson County Central, sixth; and Rush City/Pine City/Hinckley-Finlayson, eighth. The eighth qualifying team is Delano.

      Fourteen of 30 event medal-winners will return for the 2013 Class A individual competition.

      Defending champion Sela Fadness of Austin is one of two returning qualifiers in floor exercise. The other returning medalist is Abby Bickler of Austin; she placed fourth last year.

      Jailyn Brinkman of Melrose Area is the top returning medal-winner in uneven bars. She is looking to improve on last year’s runner-up showing. The other returning qualifiers are: Fadness of Austin, fourth; Courtney Jensen of Big Lake, fifth; and Christine Simon of New Prague, sixth.

      In the balance beam competition, three medalists return: Sarah Hoffman of New Prague, runner-up; Rebecca Steen of Martin County Area, fourth; and Rachelle LeBlanc of Little Falls, sixth.

      Sela Fadness of Austin and Lydia Butkowski of Melrose Area are the only two medalists returning in vault. Fadness placed third in 2012 and Butkowski was sixth.

      Fadness of Austin leads three returning qualifiers in the all-around competition. She placed third last year. The other two remaining medal-winners are: Butkowski of Melrose Area, fifth; and Brinkman of Melrose Area, sixth.

      Class AA Highlights

      Roseville Area returns as the defending champion. The Raiders return seven gymnasts from last year’s team. In addition to Roseville Area, four other teams also return from the 2012 field: Northfield, which includes students from Cannon Falls, Randolph, and Arcadia Charter School, runner-up; St. Cloud Tech, which includes students from St. Cloud Cathedral, third; Park of Cottage Grove, fourth; and Cambridge-Isanti, seventh. The other qualifying teams are Prior Lake, which includes students from Jordan, Mahtomedi, and Wayzata.

      Seven of 30 event medal-winners in 2012 will return for 2013 Class AA individual competition.

      Bailey DuPay of Northfield is the only returning medalist in balance beam. She finished in fifth place last year.

      Mariah Miller of St. Cloud Tech, who placed sixth last year, is the only returning medal-winner in the vault competition.

      Kasondra Tulloch of Park is hoping to improve on last year’s sixth-place showing in uneven bars. She is the only returning qualifier.

      Tulloch of Park, who captured runner-up honors last year, is the highest returning medalist in floor exercise. Two other medal-winners also return: DuPay of Northfield, fourth; and Rachel Deephouse of Park, sixth.

      DuPay is the only returning medalist in the all-around competition. She finished third in 2012.

      Schedule & Tickets

      The meet is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Feb. 22 and 23, at the Sports Pavilion on the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis. Team competition is scheduled for Friday, with Class A competition beginning at 11 a.m. and Class AA competition beginning at 6 p.m. The identical time schedule will be followed for Saturday's individual and all-around events, with Class A beginning in the morning and Class AA beginning in the evening.

      Tickets for the meet are available at the Sports Pavilion. Adult tickets cost $12.00 per session and student tickets cost $8.00 per session.

      A visit to any participating Wells Fargo metro location can yield a $2 discount coupon for students 13 and younger. The discount coupons are also available for the following tournaments: Girls’ Hockey, Class A Boys’ Hockey, and Girls’ and Boys’ Basketball.
