State wrestling tournament changed to three days
Personnel key to the Minnesota State High School League state wrestling tournament met recently and agreed to a plan that will condense what has been a four-day event into three days as mandated by the League's Board of Directors last week.
During a five-hour meeting it was decided to reformat the state wrestling tournament to conduct the team tournament on one day, Thursday, March 3, and conduct the individual tournament separately on Friday and Saturday, March 4 and 5. Previously, team and individual matches were conducted on the same days throughout the entire tournament, with the exception of the Wednesday session which was either all team or all individual matches. There will be no Wednesday session in 2011.
A specific schedule of the sessions for each day remains to be finalized. However, the support for a separation of the team and individual tournaments was unanimous.
Associate Director Craig Perry, who also serves as director of the state wrestling tournament, Tournament Manager Byron Olson, and Tournament Scheduler Kevin Steinbauer met with three representatives of the Minnesota Wrestling Coaches Association: President Tom Gruhlke, Past President Kurt Habek, and Executive Secretary John Peterson.
