The Morris Stingrays hosted the Perham Yellowjackets Dec. 18 at the Regional Fitness Cneter pool. The Stingrays fell to the Perham team 126-54, and also lost the junior varsity matchup 68-20.
Stingray swimmers cut times in eight of nine repeated events and took two first-place and two second-place finishes.
Coach Tim Brooks said he was very pleased with the progress of his young swimmers, many of whom have cut substantial time in just a few weeks of practice. He also noted the conduct and helpful attitude exhibited by the whole team in practices and at meets so far this season.
The Morris team will continue with their holiday practice schedule before returning to competition on Tuesday, Jan. 6 at 6 p.m. against the Melrose/Sauk Centre Fusion at the RFC.
In the 200-yard medley relay, the team of Roy Reese (backstroke 33.30), Mickey Cotter (breaststroke 46.30), Gage Anderson (butterfly 35.09), and Dillon Morehouse (freestyle 36.66) finished with a third-place time of 2:31.38.
In the 200 yard freestyle, Austin Schieler took third place with a time of 2:15.42, a 3.82 cut from the Fergus invite. He was followed by Reese's first varsity attempt at this distance with a time of 2:28.64 and Gage Anderson's 2:41.84, a cut of over 18 seconds from his initial time in this event from last season.
In the 200-yard individual medley, the Stingrays were led by Stefan Lemke's second-place finish of 2:13.89. This was Lemke's first attempt in this event in over two seasons and he finished just three seconds away from the state time cut. He was followed by Matt Cotter's 3:02.61, a cut of over four seconds from his initial splash in this event from last season.
In the 50-yard freestyle, Otto Kildegaard, returning to the Stingrays after a year abroad in Denmark, took third place with a time of 28.01, a 3.34 cut from the Fergus invite. He was followed by Morehouse's 35.57, a cut of 6.10. Jason Rinkenberger, in his first-ever Stingray varsity swimming event, came in with a time of 37.74. In the junior varsity race, Brandon Pry finished with a 41.57, a cut of 2.85, and Yasha Hoffman came in with a 49.90, a cut of 7.65.
In the one meter, six dive event, Jacob Erickson - in his second year of diving - earned a career high score of 99.75, good enough for third place.
In the 100-yard butterfly, Anderson's first ever attempt in this event resulted in a second-place time of 1:26.70. He was followed by Mickey Cotter's 2:04.06, over 12 seconds better than his initial time in this event last season.
In the 100-yard freestyle, the Stingrays were again led by Kildegaard's third-place time of 1:03.00. He was followed by Vaughn Dieter's 1:29.91, a cut of 12.58 seconds. Morehouse, in his first attempt at this length, came in with a 1:41.16. In the junior varsity event, Rinkenberger came in with a fourth-place 1:31.00 and was followed by Brandon Pry's 1:40.73, a 7.77 second cut, and Hoffman's initial attempt in this event this season with a time of 1:53.28.
In the 500-yard freestyle, Lemke's first place time of 5:15.70 was only 1.4 seconds over the state time cut.
In the 100-yard backstroke, Austin Schieler's third-place time of 1:11.64 was less than a second over the section time cut. He was followed by Reese's career-best time of 1:13.57, a cut of 1.92 seconds.
In the 100-yard breaststroke, the Stingrays were led by Matt Cotter's 1:29.84, in his first-ever varsity attempt in this event.
The Stingrays won their first 200 free relay event in over two years with a time of 1:45.46. This was accomplished by the team of Schieler (25.39), Kildegaard (28.92), Matt Cotter (28.06), Lemke (23.09). Meanwhile, the B team of Morehouse (42.37), Dieter (46.98), Rinkenberger (37.80), and Erickson (28.98) came in with a time of 2:36.13.
In 400 free relay, the team of Lemke (55.30), Schieler, (1:07.37), Reese (1:14.41), and Matt Cotter (1:17.85) finished second with a time of 4:03.81, while the B team of, Anderson (1:07.75), Erickson (1:11.51), Mickey Cotter (1:28.66), and Kildegaard (1:04.35) finished with a 4:52.28. In the junior varsity relay, Hoffman, Pry, Rinkenberger, and Dieter finished with a time of 7:01.00.
