Stop sign work to begin at Carlos Corners this week
Motorists will encounter a four-way stop north of Alexandria at the intersection of Highway 29 and Douglas County Roads 13 and 42 beginning Thursday, February 19, weather permitting.
To improve safety at the intersection, the Minnesota Department of Transportation is converting the intersection from a two-way stop to a four-way stop.
Currently, only westbound County Road 13 and eastbound County Road 42 traffic have stop signs. The improved intersection will also require northbound and southbound Highway 29 traffic to stop.
Two stop signs and two "stop ahead" signs will be added to Highway 29.
All four signs are enhanced with solar-powered LED lights around the edges. Temporary changeable message signs will also be placed on Highway 29 ahead of the intersection in both directions for added safety until motorists are accustomed to the change.
Stop ahead pavement markings will be added this summer as soon as they can be applied to the roadway, and two overhead street lights will be added later this year to enhance the intersection's safety.
MnDOT reminds motorists to slow down and watch for crews working in the area next Wednesday and Thursday - especially with snow and ice still on the roadways.
