Storm boys fall to Tigers
The Marshall Tigers scored three goals in just 18 seconds two and a half minutes into the second period and held on for a 6-4 win over the Morris Benson Area boys' hockey team on Friday, Feb. 13 in Marshall.
Penalties also aided the Tigers as they scored three times while having a man advantage.
The teams skated to a 1-1 tie in the opening period as Marshall picked up a power-play goal at the 8:53 mark, but the Storm tied the game on a Mike Morales goal at 10:45. Peter Lindblad and Sampsa Purojarvi assisted on the Morales goal.
MBA goalie Will Johnson had nine saves in the period and the Tigers' goalie had four. Three first-period penalties on the Storm kept most of the action in their zone during the period.
After the three-goal explosion in the opening minutes of the second period, the Storm settled down and the rest of the period was scoreless for a 4-1 Marshall lead after two.
Saves for the second period were nine for Johnson and 10 for Marshall.
Tyler Hansen scored an unassisted goal at the 1:43 mark of the third period and suddenly the game was 4-2 and MBA had some momentum. Another penalty however, would stem that momentum and then a controversial power-play goal by the Tigers, which led to another power play and the resulting goal on that man advantage, gave Marshall a 6-2 lead.
Morales scored again with an assist going to Thomas Horecka at 11:35 and Lindblad scored with an assist going to Morales at 13:52, but MBA ran out of time and the final score was 6-4.
Johnson came up with five more saves in the period for a game total of 23, while the Marshall goalie had three third-period saves and a game total of 17.
MBA falls to 10-9-1 on the season with the loss.
