Morris Benson Area put up a good fight against the No. 1 seed in Section 6A quarter-final action, but fell to the Flyers 5-1 at Little Falls Tuesday to end the Storm boys’ hockey season.
Little Falls will now face No. 5 Alexandria on Saturday. The Cardinals upset No. 4 Sartell.
Also in Section 6A play, No. 2 St. Cloud Apollo shut out Wadena-Deer Creek 10-0 and No. 3 Fergus Falls defeated Willmar 3-2 in overtime.
Storm fans were shocked when Tanner Picht’s goal early in the first period was not acknowledged. Instead, while trying to stop a Flyer breakaway to the goal, Picht was called for tripping, resulting in the Flyers going up 1-0 on a penalty shot.
Shortly after the Flyers took a 2-0 lead early in the second period, Corey Storck scored the Storm’s only goal on assists from Riley Blake and Chad Schwarz.
Kyle Kennedy stopped 19 of the 24 shots he faced in the Storm’s net. The Flyers’ goalie had 18 saves.
