The Morris Benson Area Storm boys hockey team ignites the ice with four victories this past week. The Storms first win was in Wahpeton last Thursday, Jan. 30. Then in Morris, the Storm won against Red Lake Falls on Friday, Jan. 31, edging a 4-3 win over the Eagles. On Saturday, Feb. 1, the Storm won in Worthington in a prep hockey doubleheader before coming home to Benson for their fourth win in a row against Redwood Valley.


The Storm is now 6-15 and gunning for a home play-in playoff game on Tuesday, Feb. 18.

MBA Storm 7, Wahpeton 3 The Storm traveled to Wahpeton to face off against Breckenridge/Wahpeton on Thursday, Jan. 30.

The Storm was up 3-0 into the second before the Blades’ power play took over, scoring three goals in less than three minutes to tie the game. The Storm had 23 minutes in the penalty box on 10 infractions–that’s almost one and a half periods of hockey. Despite being a man down, the Storm didn’t just give up, Gimberlin started a rally scoring effort at 10:43. Over the next 13 minutes, the Storm added three more scores to take the victory 7-3.

MBA Storm 4, Red Lake Falls 3 Red Lakes Falls took a 2-0 lead at the end of the first, but that wasn’t enough as the Storm answered with three goals of their own to take the lead 3-2 into the second intermission.

Tanner Mikkelson added a fourth goal in the third on a power play. The Eagles answered with a goal in the third, but failed to find the net after that, resulting in a 4-3 Storm victory.

Bo Olson got the Storm rally started with his power play goal in the second, assisted by Corey Storck and Chad Schwarz. Nate Vipond also found the net off an Olson pass in the win.

MBA Storm 7, Worthington 1 For most of the game’s first 42 minutes Saturday, Feb. 1, the Worthington Trojans skated with the visiting Storm in Southwest Conference action. But in the final 17 minutes, the Storm effectively put the contest out of reach by scoring four goals, stretching their 3-1 lead into a 7-1 victory over the Trojans.

Penalties were a factor in the contest with 26 minutes in the box on nine infractions. The Storm took full advantage, scoring four of seven goals while Worthington was shorthanded.

Olson led the Storm with two goals and an assist, and Taner Gimberlin added a goal with two assists for the winning Storm.

MBA Storm 3, Redwood Valley 1 The Storm continued the offensive pressure and winning streak with a 3-1 victory over the Redwood Valley Cardinals on Monday, Feb. 3 in Benson.

Bo Gullickson started things off for the Storm with an early goal in the first. Redwood answered with its lone goal of the night with just over a minute left to go into the first intermission tied at one.

The Storm kept the ball rolling with a go-ahead goal by Olson in the second, and Corey Goff hit an empty net with one second left to take the win 3-1.

Tony Bruns stopped 25 of 25 shots he faced guarding the Storm net.

The Storm will travel to Sauk Centre on Thursday to face Prairie Centre and are back home for their last regular season game on Tuesday, Feb. 11 in Morris at the Lee Community Center before entering playoffs, which start the following week on the 18th.
