MBA 4

Luverne 3

The Storm travelled to Luverne Jan. 31 and pulled out a close 4-3 win over the Cardinals. The game was tight throughout the contest, not only on the score board, but also in the shots-on-goal category where the Storm had 30 and Luverne made 28.

With just 1:09 remaining in the first period, the Cardinals were called for a penalty and the Storm capitalized when Tyler Hansen scored off of a Mike Morales assist 27 seconds into the power play and the Storm led 1-0 after one.

MBA goalie Will Johnson made nine saves in the period and the Cardinal goalie, Tanner Skattum, stopped six.

Peter Lindblad made the score 2-0 when he got an unassisted goal on another power play at the 2:43 mark of the second period. The Cardinals answered when Skattum caught the Storm on a line change and passed the puck up to Zach Olson who scored on the breakaway at 6:13 to bring the Cardinals to within one.

Despite the Storm getting several good chances the rest of the period, Skattum kept them off of the board and the second period ended with MBA in the lead by a 2-1 margin.

Johnson had a good period as well, stopping 13 Luverne attempts.

The third period was scoreless for almost 14 minutes before Lindblad scored another unassisted goal to give the Storm a more comfortable 3-1 lead at 13:04. The two-goal advantage didn't last long however, as Nick Meyer scored for Luverne just 25 seconds later. The Cardinals then pulled their goalie with just over one minute remaining and MBA seemingly iced the game when Hansen scored an empty-net goal with just 50 seconds remaining. Luverne did not quit however. As the state's third leading scorer, Phil Paquette, threaded a perfect pass up the ice to Olson who scored again and it was 4-3 with just 25 seconds remaining. The Cardinals actually got another point blank shot off, but Johnson came up with the save and the defense cleared the rebound at the buzzer as MBA held on for the win.

Johnson made six saves in the period for a game total of 25 while Skattum made five in the period and a game total of 26.

Shanley 4

MBA 3

On Tuesday, the Storm took on the Fargo Shanley Deacons at the Lee Community Center in Morris and dropped a heartbreaking overtime game by the score of 4-3.

After a slow start for the Storm, the first period was played very evenly as both goalies, Johnson for MBA and Christopher Stokke of Shanley made nine saves and the score was 0-0 at the break.

The second period was all Shanley as most of the time was spent in the MBA zone. Johnson, however, kept the Storm in the game, stopping 17 of the 19 shots on goal that the Deacons got in the period. Fargo Shanley got the first two goals of the period, one on the power play, but the Storm answered with two of their own. first Sampsa Purojarvi scored with assists going to Morales and Josh Taylor at 11:12, and then Ethan Ratliff-Crain scored with assists from Lindblad and Thomas Horecka at 15:19 and the game was tied at 2-2 going into the final period. MBA was only able to muster up four shots in the period but cashed in by scoring on two of them.

The Deacons regained the lead with another power-play goal at the 6:58 mark of the third period, but Dustin Sauter of MBA scored on a blistering slap shot from just inside the blue line at 10:25 to tie the game at 3-3. Morales picked up another assist on the goal. MBA kept the pressure on for the remainder of the game, out-shooting Fargo Shanley by a 12-7 margin in the period, but they were unable to get the go-ahead goal so the game went into an eight-minute sudden death overtime period.

The Deacons ended the suspense early however, scoring on the first shot of the period just 28 seconds in to claim the victory.

Save totals for the game ended with Johnson at 32 and Stokke at 22.

MBA will have a rematch with Luverne at the Lee Community Center at 6 p.m. on Tuesday. This game is rescheduled from Dec. 6. They then travel to Marshall for a 7 p.m. game on Friday the 13th.
