Storm boys start season with a loss at Benson

The Morris Benson Area boys' hockey team opened the 2008-09 season with a loss to Willmar on Tuesday night at the Benson Civic Center. The Cardinals dominated the game, taking home a 7-1 victory over the Storm.

Senior Will Johnson got the start in the net for the Storm and was tested early and often as Willmar recorded 50 shots on goal for the game. The Storm only got in eight shots.

Willmar got on the board first, with Grant Show scoring two first-period goals, at the 2:31 mark, and again at 11:03.

Johnson made 13 saves in the period while the Willmar goalie, Ben Leitch made just two.

Willmar continued to apply the pressure in the second period, getting three goals, from Todd Gregg 1:01 into the period, and then two from Landon Peterson at 2:04, and at 7:16 on a power play.

Johnson made 16 more second-period saves and Leitch made five.

As was the case all night, Willmar was the more aggressive team, controlling the puck for much of the period.

Gabe Amon scored for Willmar at 2:55 to open the third period scoring.

The Storm scored their only game of the night when Andreas Siggelin scored off of a Peter Lindblad assist at the 3:24 mark. The goal came on the Storm's only shot of the period.

Willmar closed out the scoring at the 6:14 mark when Matt Odom scored making the final score 7-1.

Johnson stopped 14 more Cardinal attempts in the third period for a total of 43 while Leitch was forced to make just seven saves in the contest.
