The Morris Benson Area Storm girls’ hockey team recorded their first win in Benson on Saturday, Dec. 6. The Storm took a 4-3 victory in OT against the Windom Eagles.

“Now that’s what I’m talking about,” assistant coach Mike Curtis exclaimed.

“It’s always good to get that first win under our belt,” Curtis said. “It gives the girls a ton of confidence [on the ice].”

The Storm took an early lead scoring two unanswered goals in the first. Morgan DeHaan put the Storm on the board with an assist by Emily Walz at 10:01. A few minutes later, Hanna Lindblad scored her unassisted goal in the contest to put the Storm up 2-0.

The Eagles didn’t answer until beginning of the second period when Alexis Jellema-Baerg scored her lone goal of the night just under three minutes into play, putting the Eagles on the board. While keeping their defense strong, the Storm kept adding pressure offensively and ended up scoring in the second to get their two point lead back against the Eagles. The Storm scorer was Kelsey Rajewsky aided by an assist from DeHaan with just under 12 minutes to play in the second.

Things were looking up for the Storm as they were ahead of the Eagles 3-1 going into the third period. Unfortunately, that two goal lead wasn’t enough for the Eagles to just give up. The Eagles made a comeback, scoring two to tie it up in the third. Addison Beaty of the Eagles shot the tying puck to score with 4:13 left in the third period. It’s hard to make a comeback, but it’s even harder to not give up when a team comes from behind on you. The Storm didn’t give up hope as they battled until the final buzzer, forcing an overtime period.

In the eight-minute sudden death overtime period, the Storm got called for cross-checking at the seven minute mark, putting the Eagles up a player and on a power play. The Storm defense held true and kept clearing the puck whenever they had the chance. That was until the Storm was back at even strength again, then it was time to attack. With 3:33 left in the overtime period, Lindblad found Rajewsky on the left side of the net, and Rajewsky slipped the puck by Eagle goaltender Emily Steen for the 4-3 game winning goal.

The Storm will now face off against Long Prairie-Grey Eagle in Morris on Thursday, Dec. 12. The puck will drop at 7 p.m.
