Storm girls open 2012-13 hockey season

The Morris Benson Area girls' hockey team is still looking for its first win after opening the season with four straight losses in non-conference action. The Storm have only one senior and two juniors skating. Of the 17 players, 11 are in 7th, 8th or 9th grade.

Park Rapids 9

The Storm opened the season Nov. 10 with a 9-0 loss at Park Rapids.

Park Rapids went up 3-0 after one period of play. The Panthers added four goals in the second and two in the third periods for the 9-0 margin.

The Storm was out shot 57-6.

The Storm scored their first goal of the season in the home opener at Benson Nov. 13, but lost 8-1 to Long Prairie-Grey Eagle/Wadena-Deer Creek.

After the visitors took a 3-0 lead in the first period, Hanna Lindblad got the Storm on the board early in the second period with an unassisted goal.

The visitors answered with another goal later in the second and added four in the third period.

Austin 11

The Storm suffered an 11-0 loss to Austin Friday in the Willmar Invite at Cardinal Arena.

Austin's Carley Grunewald scored four straight goals -- two in the first period and two in the second -- and added five assists. Kennedy Thompson scored two goals and assisted on four, and Lea Semones scored two goals and assisted on two.

Austin goalie Mara Overby faced just seven shots.

Storm goalie Shianne Wold faced 33 shots and turned back 26.

Litchfield/D-C 9

In the third-place game Saturday, the Storm fell to Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato 9-1.

Six different players scored for the Dragons, who picked up their first victory. Ali McGraw, Teegan Wyffels, and Kennedy Sommerfield each scored twice.

Lauren Knisley contributed a goal and four helpers for LDC.

The Storm broke up the shutout on a shot by Emily Walz from the top of the left circle with 16 seconds left with an assist from Morgan DeHaan.

The Storm were outshot 42-7.
