Storm girls succeed in '07-'08
The Morris Benson Area varsity girls' hockey team put together one of its best seasons finishing 2007-08 with an 18-6 record and a No. 3 seeding in the Section 6A tournament.
The Storm got off to a 5-0 start and were 13-2 by early January.
The Storm posted three shut outs in 2007-08, including the season opener Nov. 13 against Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato (7-0) and a 1-0 win over Detroit Lakes. The team's biggest win was a 13-0 shut out over Redwood Valley on Dec. 20.
Another big win was an 11-2 victory over Windom on Dec. 8.
The Storm took third place at the Willmar Holiday Tournament. Morris Benson Area opened the tourney with a 2-1 sudden-death overtime loss to Detroit Lakes, but defeated Mankato East/Loyola 9-4 and Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato 3-1.
The other early-season loss was also by one point in a 3-2 deficit to Wadena/Deer Creek/Long Prairie.
The girls' final three regular-season losses came to tough teams including Class A State Tournament champion Alexandria (5-0), Marshall (6-0), and Willmar (8-2).
The most memorable game of the season was the first-round play-off game against Little Falls in which the Storm advanced to the semifinals with a 6-3 victory.
In the section semifinals the Storm were eliminated by Fergus Falls in a 6-3 loss.
The Storm averaged just over four goals per game, while allowing just over 2.5 goals on average.
Most of the team will be back next season with only two girls graduating in 2008. Goalie Hannah Horecka was 12-6 in the net for the Storm in 2007-08. Forward Tessa Miller will also be missed.
The team's three leading scorers will return. Sophomore Dani Schultz led the Storm with 32 goals and 19 assists. Junior Dani Staples netted 15 goals and recorded 14 assists and junior Brooke Anderson scored 16 goals and helped on seven assists.
Freshman Brooke Falk will be back in the net for the Storm. She finished the season with an unblemished 6-0 record.
