Storm has numbers for a great program
The Morris Benson Area boys’ hockey team started its 2013-2014 season Monday, Nov. 11.
This season will mark a first for head coach Jeremiah Day as he coached the Storm girls’ team the previous two seasons. There is always differences between coaching boys versus coaching girls, but Day says the basics are the same throughout the sport.
“We got a lot higher numbers [in the boys’ program], speed of the game is definitely different, but hockey is hockey,” Day said. “If you do all the little things right, things seem to work out most of the time.”
Losing a handful of seniors last season, including the top three season point leaders in Tanner Picht, Mac Beyer, and Brody Gimberlin, the Storm has some empty holes in their lines to fill.
“We lost some real good players [last season], but from what we’ve seen so far we have players in place to fill those shoes,” Day said. “We might not ‘right off the bat’ have it just ready to go, but our consistency throughout the levels will make us a good team.”
With around 35 players out for boys’ hockey, the Storm will have both a varsity and JV squad again this year.
“It’s going to be really hard to split the teams this year,” Day said. “We’ve got a lot of good skaters, that last line on varsity is going to be a tough one to pick.”
Coach Day also mentioned that the last varsity line will most likely be very fluid this year, changing as players improve or unfortunate injuries occur as the season goes on.
MBA Storm ended last season with a winning 17-10 record, and coach Day has high hopes for this season as well.
“I think we’re going to do well,” Day said. “I think we’re going to be competitive.”
The Storm will travel to their season opener against the Willmar Cardinals on Tuesday, Nov. 26 at 7:15 p.m. The junior varsity will play at 5:30.
