The Morris Benson Area Storm took a five and a half hour trip to face the Lake of the Woods Bears in girls hockey on Friday, Dec. 28. Though the long trip, the Storm hit the ice with control, never losing the lead and taking a 6-4 victory over the Bears.

“It was very nice to pull out a win after traveling so far,” assistant coach Mike Curtis said. “[We’ve] seen a lot of improvement in the girls’ ability to recognize positioning and knowing where to be both offensively and defensively.”

The Storm scored first with a goal by Kelsey Rajewsky assisted by Emily Walz in just over a minute into the game--setting the pace for the rest of the afternoon. The Bears tacked on a goal of their own in the first, but Nicole Berens found Hanna Lindblad to score with 4:46 left in the first to take a 2-1 lead at first intermission.

The second period was almost a repeat of the first. The Storm got the first goal, again, taking a 3-1 lead when Berens found the net from a Kamri Kalthoff pass. The Bears answered with two goals of their own to tie the game at 3-all. Despite another tie, the Storm kept the pressure on offensively and added another goal by Hallie Watzke with just under three minutes left in the second to take a 4-3 lead going into the second intermission.

In the third period, the Storm tacked on two more goals to take their biggest lead of the afternoon 6-3. The Bears scored a quick goal with 4:21 left in the third, but the Storm rained down on the Bears, taking the victory 6-4.

“A lot of things went well for us [in Lake of the Woods],” Curtis said. “The girls did a good job finding open lanes for passes and they executed really effective passing plays. They had a lot of really nice shots and recognized opportunities to carry the puck through open ice, maintaining control throughout.”

“Also, they made a pretty speedy adjustment to the biggest offensive threat of the other team,” Curtis said. “It was an all around solid effort with good hustle, a fun game to watch.”

The Storm will now travel to Marshall on Thursday, January 2 to face off against the Tigers at 7:00 p.m.
