The Pay it Forward community, along with students at St. Mary's and members of Montonye's family surprised her with the award while she was volunteering in the second grade classroom at St. Mary's.

Eighty-eight-year-old Montonye was nominated by her niece, Rose Murphy, who called her a “powerhouse of volunteerism in the community.”

“May volunteers each week at St. Mary's school helping children read,” Murphy wrote in her nomination letter. “Her support of these children will have a lifelong impact on them as the grow, continue their education and contribute to society.

“The residents of West Wind Village have enjoyed both employment and volunteerism from Mary. She served as a nurse's aide for many years. When Mary retired, I believe in her 70s, she continued to volunteer at the nursing home. She is still volunteering there today and assists residents on a regular basis,” Murphy wrote.

Montonye also volunteers at the Stevens County Food Shelf and crochets blankets to be sent to missions around the world.

“All of Mary's volunteer work is joyfully contributed from her heart,” Murphy concluded. “She is kind, humble and giving. She truly believes in 'do unto others.' She 'pays it forward' whenever, and however, she can.”

Pay it Forward, Stevens County is a program designed to reward individuals who make life better for other people in our community.

Pay it Forward, Stevens County is sponsored by Morris Pizza Ranch, Morris Sun Tribune, Bank of the West, West Central Screen and Print, the Regional Fitness Center, and KMRS/KKOK Radio Stations.

Nominations can be dropped off at any of the participating businesses. The committee will meet once per month to pick one person who best exemplifies paying it forward.
