Teacher survey process approved for Hancock
The Hancock School Board took the next step in state mandated evaluations last week by approving a survey process to conduct the teacher surveys. In the past the board has adopted the administrative evaluation process which is the first requirement from the state. This was implemented this year.
Next year the state is requiring a teacher evaluation process. Part of this will be a survey that students will complete regarding the teachers. The Hancock administration has been looking at survey process options and decided that one called My Student Survey would be the best. This was termed to be the most comprehensive, user friendly and cost effective system. With the system going live next year, the board decided to do a sample survey this year just to familiarize everyone with the process.
The survey will actually be on line and students in grades 3-12 will be able to log on and answer the questions. The questions are tailored to find the characteristics of the teachers. If a student appears to be generating all ‘bad’ answers throughout, their survey could be rejected.
The goal of the survey is to identify the stregnths of a teacher and also allow teachers to learn how they can improve on their teaching practices.
Supertintendent Jerry Martinsen told the board members that a new bus has been purchased and should be arriving soon. The total purchase price was $90,259 which includes $5,500 in Motor Vehicle Excise Tax. The bus is a 2014 International and was purchased at Hoglund Bus Co. out of Monticello, Minn.
• Some new hires were approved including Jewell Feucht as Assistant Cook and Hannah Plattner as Assistant Track Coach. Also approved was Abby Olson and Jayna Ruprecht as long term subs for preschool.
• Two open enrollment applications were approved and the students started here at the beginning of January.
• Principal Tim Pahl told the board that the building construction punch list is nearly complete. Progress is being made steadily and hopefully all will be complete soon.
• The board members who attended the Minnesota School Board Association conference in January reported on some of the sessions they attended.
• The school has had three snow days thus far this year. Therefore school will be held on Feb. 17 and on April 21. The administration will be looking at adding the last and any future snow days on to the end of the school year.
• The officers for the school board will remain the same with Barry Nelson as chairman, Rod Peterswon as clerk and Joel Flaten as treasurer. All committees will also remain the same. The only change in committees was the addition of members to the Strategic Planning Committee. Joel Flaten, Gary Nohl and Troy Hausmann will serve on this committee.
The next regular board meeting will be held on Feb. 24 at 6 p.m. due to the President’s Day holiday on the third Monday.
