All those involved were from Fergus Falls and West Fargo, North Dakota, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

The crash happened at about 9 a.m. Wednesday.

Thomas Martin, 58, of Fergus Falls was merging his 2007 Toyota Corolla onto the freeway when he hit an icy spot and spun out of control, ending up in the median.

The driver of a 2006 Peterbilt semi, Darrell Albertson, 69, of Fergus Falls, pulled over into the east bound shoulder to try to help.

Meanwhile, a 15-year-old driver from West Fargo, Samuel Dunnuck, lost control of a 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer, slid sideways and hit the rear of the semi. The impact caused the Trailblazer to cross a traffic lane and collide with the Corolla.

The 15 year old died, along with two of his passengers - his 48-year-old father, Thomas Dunnuck, and his 12-year-old brother, Gabriel Dunnuck. Another relative in that same vehicle, 8-year-old Anna Dunnuck, was transferred to the St. Cloud Hospital in critical condition. Her condition was upgraded to fair on Thursday.
