Thunder roars over the Tigers

The Morris Area / Chokio-Alberta / Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley girls tennis team dropped a home contest to Long Prairie-Grey Eagle / Upsala-Swanville on Monday, August 25.

The weather conditions were a bit on the windy side for a tennis match, but the Tigers managed to pull out three W’s in the 4-3 loss.

“The girls adjusted to the wind pretty well, I know it caught girls on both teams,” head coach Brittany House said. “There were some very close matches, but we just couldn't win those game points when we needed to.”

Second singles player Katie Cannon lost her first set, but won the second to take her opponent into a third set match where she was then defeated 6-2.

“Katie played a tough game [Monday]. She was down in the second set 2-5 and then came back to win it 7-5,” House said. “That shows a lot of mentality and leadership... Just because you're down in a set doesn't mean you give up, you keep fighting and playing hard, and that’s exactly what she did.”

The three victories for the Tigers came from the doubles teams.

At one doubles, Annie Brandt and Jessica Burks defeated Amanda Tschida and Allison Guggleberger 6-1, 4-6, 6-4.

At two doubles, Rachel Wagner and Brittany Cardwell defeated Whitney Eckel and Kalley Dynes Levin in straight sets 6-1, 6-2.

At three doubles, Kaitlin Asmus and Hannah Harste defeated Sam VanWienen and Emily Krousey 6-4, 6-3.

“Our doubles did a really great job working together as a team and talking to each other,” House said.

Though they don’t count towards the team score, the Tigers also won in the two exhibition matches. Morgan Rohloff and Makayla Mau toppled their opponents 6-4, 6-0, and Caitlin Wilts and Rachel Michaelson won 6-1.

Next, the Tigers open their road season in West Central Area on Thursday, Aug. 28.
