MORRIS — The 36th annual University of Minnesota, Morris Jazz Festival will be held Friday, April 4, and Saturday, April 5. Featuring guest artists Kevin Harris on piano and Darren Barrett on trumpet, the festival promises to be a unique and soulful experience. Performances will be held nightly in the Student Center's Edson Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. All are welcome to attend.

Both Harris and Barrett are veterans of the east coast jazz scene. Harris’ unique style is influenced by Thelonious Monk, Danilo Perez, Charlie Parker, Scott Joplin, and the folkloric rhythms of Cuba. Barrett is the winner of the 1997 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition, which is no surprise based on his powerful tone and soaring technique.

Founded in 1978 by Professor Emeritus of Jazz Jim “Doc” Carlson, the festival brings together high-school, community, and college jazz ensembles for clinics and master classes with world-renowned jazz musicians. Each night the festival concludes with a performance by guest artists and the Morris jazz ensembles.

“The jazz ensembles have been working all year to prepare for this year’s Jazz Fest,” said Jason Squinobal, head of jazz studies and jazz ensembles director. “We are all very excited to be hosting Darren Barrett and Kevin Harris. Morris has a long and distinguished tradition of excellence in jazz, and I’m very proud of the current jazz ensemble members for continuing that tradition of excellence.”

As is tradition, the West Central All Stars will open the Friday performance. The UMM Alumni Jazzers will play on Saturday night.

Tickets for the evening concerts will be available online at tickets.umn.edu or by phone at 320-589-6077 beginning Friday, March 7. Ticket order forms are also available at Higbies and the Office of Student Activities. Advance ticket orders will be processed March 7. Remaining seats will be sold beginning Monday, March 10.
