I would like to take the opportunity to introduce and educate the community about a new organization that began early this year. The name of the organization is the Business Professionals of America (BPA). Business Professionals of America is the leading Career Technical Student Organization (CTSO) for students pursuing careers in business management, office administration, information technology and other related career fields. BPA has more than 51,000 members in over 2,300 chapters in 23 states. BPA is a "co-curricular" organization that supports business and information technology educators by offering curriculum based on national standards. The Workplace Skills Assessment Program (WSAP) prepares students to succeed and assesses real-world business skills and problem solving abilities in finance, management, IT and computer applications. I recently asked Jenny Maras, to provide me with some information about the Morris BPA chapter.

With an overwhelming amount of excitement, Morris Area High School Business Professionals of America (BPA) is in full swing.  With the help of 47 eager students, Mrs. Maras is certain Morris BPA will be a standout chapter in the state. We are thankful for the recent grant awarded through the Morris Public Schools Foundation that will assist with various start-up costs and contest registration. The following highlight some of the great things going on with BPA:

BPA members will compete in contests throughout the school year. There are four main areas they will compete in. These are Financial, Administrative Support, Information Technology, and Management/Marketing/ Human Resources. Students can compete in up to three events per year. Competitions are held throughout the school year. The regional competition is held in late January at Alexandria Technical College. The winning individuals or teams then compete in the state competition which is held in mid March at the Hyatt Regency in Minneapolis. The National competition is held in early May in Washington DC. The Torch Awards is an honorary program within BPA. Students are recognized at this event for the work they do in and out of school.

The chapter officers for Morris BPA are: President MacKenzie Weatherly; Vice President Ashley Zidarich, Sydney Beyer; Secretaries Haley Hemore, Monserrat Mendez; Treasurer Michael Anderson; Historians Megan Johnson, Renae Mullins; Jr. Officers Katie Jergenson, Roy Reese, Hannah Stewart, Paige Loew.

The Morris BPA chapter will also be involved in a variety of community events. They were entered in the Parade of Lights, will do some holiday caroling, and will be making fleece blankets for members of the community. Recently, the BPA held a food drive competition between the 6th hour classes at MAHS. Over 1,000 pounds of food was donated to the Stevens County Food Shelf, along with $475 in cash donations. What a fantastic effort! For more information about BPA you can call or email Jenny Maras at the high school or go to bpa.org, or mnbpa.org.
