Handbook Presentation and Registration
Every fall I give a Student Handbook presentation to all 7-12 students that attend MAHS. The purpose of the presentation is to assist students in understanding the procedures and rules at Morris Area High School. I meet with the classes individually because what applies to seniors doesn't necessarily apply to 7th grade students and vice-versa. I follow this up with a spring refresher. It is a much shorter presentation and I highlight some of the rules and procedures that need to be reiterated or reinforced as we swing into the last half of the school year. I spent the past week talking to each class and I thought it would be a good idea to highlight some of the rules that I emphasized with the students.
Cafeteria - the main points of emphasis is that the cafeteria should be kept clean. Students are reminded that they need a pass to be in the hallways and that they must listen to the lunch supervisors.
Damage to School Property - we talked about the difference between willful damage to school property versus accidental damage to school property. Students who damage school property will be held responsible for the satisfactory repair or replacement of whatever was damaged.
Dress Code - With warmer weather approaching, it is a good reminder to students about what is appropriate to wear when in school. Certain clothes items are not permitted to be worn. These include tank-tops, spaghetti strap tops, and shirts that advertise alcohol or tobacco products. Short-shorts are also not permitted to be worn. Short-shorts are defined as shorts that rise above the fingertips when the arms are straight at your sides.
Cell Phones - Cell phones are allowed to be used before school, during lunch, and after school. Students who have their cell phone taken away will get it back at the end of the day for the first offense. Students who have it taken away a second time will have to have one of their parents pick it up from the school. A third violation results in the cell phone remaining in the principal's office for five days.
On our school website parents will be able to find a power-point that outlines the registration process for 7-12th grade students at MAHS. This power-point presentation goes along with a video (the video is not on the website yet) that will hopefully answer some of the questions parents have about registration. The power-point and video covers what I normally talk to the students about when I visit their classrooms. Some of the information covered is embedded academic standards, credit requirements by department, typical 9-12 grade schedules, elective classes, and the on-line registration process.
I also wanted to mention that on our High School website there is a Monthly Update video. When you click on the High School tab, the first thing you will see is the video. This video (3-4 minutes in duration) updates parents on calendar events during the current month and highlights some of the important happenings in the school during the current month.
